This time last year, Brock Osweiler was the hottest NFL free agent around; this year, he's a liability and a salary dump as a part of an unprecedented trade. By dumping Osweiler's contract onto the Cleveland Browns, the Houston Texans have positioned themselves to be the frontrunners for the services of quarterback Tony Romo.
Stunner: Texans trade Brock Osweiler AND 2018 2nd-rd pick to CLEV for Browns to take Osweiler contract off Houston books, sources tell ESPN.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 9, 2017
Of course, Osweiler isn't the centerpiece of this trade, but his hefty contract and the second round draft pick are. The Browns could even cut the former Broncos quarterback, sending him back to the free agent pool for a second year in a row.
Told #Browns trade for Osweiler is similar to a basketball contract trade. He's not there to be the QB. They bought a draft pick.— Benjamin Allbright (@AllbrightNFL) March 9, 2017
Houston's signing of Osweiler could go down as one of the priciest blunders in NFL history, for both the Texans, the Browns and Osweiler himself.
Osweiler privately told people he should have never left the Broncos. That signing with Houston was a mistake. Ummm, I'd say he was right— Michael Giardi (@MikeGiardi) March 9, 2017
